Extract of banaba leaf, its use and antidiabetic agent

 To obtain a banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa) leaf extract having excellent preservability and usable as a drink or food by industrially extracting banaba leaf under prescribed condition and using the extract as freeze-dried powder or as a drink, to provide a method for using the extract and to provide an antidiabetic agent containing the extract as a component. CONSTITUTION: Dried and crushed banaba leaf is extracted with hot water and filtered to obtain a hot-water extract liquid and a residue. The residue is extracted with methanol and filtered to obtain a methanol extract liquid. The hot-water extract and the methanol extract are separately sterilized in an autoclave and freeze-dried to obtain the objective banaba leaf extract powder. The extract powder can be mixed into a food or drink after diluting to a concentration of about 0.1-10%. It is also effective as an antidiabetic agent.
